Pistol Club
The Oregon State University Pistol Club is a sport club organized through the OSU Department of Recreational Sports. All students and faculty/staff that have paid RecSports fees through a Dixon Recreational Center membership are able to participate in OSU Pistol Club. The OSU Indoor Target Range is two stories, has 16 firing points, .22LR caliber only, and has a heated safety ventilation system. The range has a shooting distance of 50 feet.
The majority of people who visit Pistol Club have never handled a firearm before, or have very limited experience with firearms. Pistol Club is one of the largest RecSports clubs at Oregon State University with more than 100 members every academic year. We have two goals for new visitors to the club, learn and demonstrate proper firearm safety, and to have a positive and enjoyable shooting experience.
The three safety rules:
1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
3. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
Training:
The first and most important thing that we go over for people new to our club is firearm safety. We also go over the rules and operation of the OSU Indoor Target Range. The safety training extensively goes over:
- The three safety rules (see above)
- The three range commands
- Terminology and safe handling of club pistols, including but not limited to mechanical operation, grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, loading, unloading and clearing malfunctions.
